5/6/2011 - LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- What started less than two years ago as an innovative way to stay in shape, has evolved into a physical fitness tool for Airmen at the headquarters of the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency here.

The agency's physical training boot camp recently capped its three-phased Fit to Fight initiative with a marked improvement in the PT test scores of participants.

In the nine-month period just prior to the PT boot camp, the agency improved its pass rate by 14 percent, from 78.2 to 92.3, according to officials.

"We were dedicated to continuing our progress," said 1st Lt. Laura Newberg, the project officer for Fit to Fight III. "So we came up with innovative ideas and challenging events to peak everyone's interest."

The motivational boot camp targeted AFISRA members who previously scored 80 or below on their physical fitness tests, she said. The boot camp was augmented by a series of competitive obstacle course events featuring a tire rolling course, push-up/sit-up area, wounded wingman carry and a low-crawl area, among others.

Agency directorates competed in the events each quarter to promote healthy living and to earn bragging rights associated with the AFISRA Commander's Cup.

Phase III was the culmination of the Fit for Life program, and followed phase II, which focused on the fitness test itself and began in January 2010.

More than 350 agency headquarters members, including AFISRA Commander Maj. Gen. Bradley Heithold, combined to do 606,675 push-ups (which equals lifting 400 B-2 bombers), 717,776 sit-ups (more than 100 sit-ups per person on Lackland Air Force Base) and ran 28,204 miles (nearly 21 trips across Afghanistan).

The Fit to Fight vision took shape in August 2009 with phase I -- Commit to be Fit, Lieutenant Newberg said. The goal then was for the agency to shed 500 pounds by Thanksgiving. Each of the 310 participants pledged the number of pounds they thought they could lose.

After three months of monitoring everyone's weight, a total of 2,294 pounds was lost, or more than five times the pledged amount, she said.

"I'm very pleased with the success of our program," General Heithold said. "I'm convinced we started this at the right time. By holding ourselves to standards and leading from the front, we have an excellent assessment pass rate and I know we'll continue to excel."

Unbelievable. You folks are jumping to conclusions fast. First off, I am not whining about PT. And as far as being rotund, I am 5' 10" and 175 pounds, and have no issues with the PT test. Did I say that work is more important than PT? If not, I definitely should have. And yes, I am a SNCO who always takes care of any Airman and leads by example. Just because I don't believe that PT is the most crucial aspect of being in the USAF doesn't mean I don't support it. Voicing your opinion is not being whiny, it's your duty as a SNCO to speak up if you believe certain things need to be changed.

Let's look at the numbers again. 350 people tested, 324 people passed. Sounds pretty damn good to me.

It's great to see a unit trying something new to break out of the mundain. To all those involved, keep it up! Keeping PT fun is the easiest way to help get members into better shape and it's great to read about a unit doing that.

Finally somebody has finally stepped up to shut up the whiners. MSgt W - It is your job as a SNCO to make your people better at their jobs AND their fitness. Grow up! Junior - obviously too much time on your hands. Perhaps you need to be out doing more work AND PT. If you can't say something good just don't say anything.

Good, good. I was wondering whether or not we'd have a positive story such as this without the usual AF whiners and there they are. We have the likely rotund MSgt W complaining about something positive happening with PT... wah! "What about our jobs?" "My work should mean I don't have to do PT," right, MSgt W? How many times have you whined about a tape around your belly too? And Junior with his Junior perspective... probably tried to do something positive once had it shelved and now takes out his whiny frustrations on anything good that happens anywhere. You two are the epitome of the whiny AF everybody sees. It's embarassing that at least one of you is supposedly a SNCO. Your mothers and/or fathers clearly didn't teach you anything so leave it to me to pick up where they failed. When someone does something decent and good that they're proud of, either compliment them or save your whining for your dog.

Good job on making the numbers sound great. If you do the math it comes out to less than one hundred push-ups/sit-ups per week per person. Way to highlight doing less than any squadron that actually does pt three times a week. Just goes to show that if you track numbers you can make anything look good.

Great - Now let's put that same energy and focus on making people better at their jobs. Never gonna happen. What are our priorities?

310 people 2300 pounds lost.. 600K push-ups. Outstanding. It's really amazing to see a unit pull together like this.. .and I'm impressed with the commander setting the example as opposed to telling everyone else to do it. You all obviously had a phenomenal program.. Nice work Lt.
