Cooperation with Brazil

Background

Brazil is the 10th largest energy consumer in the world and the third largest in the Western Hemisphere, behind the United States and Canada. Brazil has recently made great strides in increasing its total energy production through deepwater exploration. Increasing domestic oil production has been a long-term goal of the Brazilian government.

As a member state of the International Regulators Forum, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) interaction with Brazil has been primarily in offshore regulatory and safety issues. The Bureau’ primary counterpart and focus for cooperative activities in Brazil is the ANP (National Petroleum Agency) within the Brazilian Ministry of Energy.

Past Activities

On October 31st the Bureau participated by invitation to an event hosted by The American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil. Bureau representatives met with the delegation to discuss the Bureau's oil and gas regulatory program, environmental protection, and safety. The Brazilian delegation totaled about 30, representing oil and gas operating companies, manufacturers, and government agencies. Attached are the Bureau's presentations: Overview, safety issues, and environmental assessment.
