With Over 1,000 officers and airmen, the “Redhawks” of the Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Fighter Wing are an integral component of the U.S. military’s total force and the nation’s air and maritime defense. As part of Air Combat Command and the North American Air Defense System, the unit guards the Pacific Northwest airspace and coastal waters from northern California to the Canadian border with F-15 Eagles on 24-hour Air Sovereignty alert. Both operational and training missions take 142nd Fighter Wing units around the globe in support of drug interdiction, Air Expeditionary Force missions, and contingency operations. On September 11, 2001, the 142nd Fighter Wing was one of the first units to respond with increased air defense to enhance security on the west coast. In 2004, the unit provided humanitarian aid in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the 2007 floods in Vernonia, Oregon. We continue to support Operation NOBLE EAGLE, a national military response to homeland defense, and Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.

Bill are available to most unit members provided they enlist for 6 years. These benefits are available to our members after completion of basic training and technical school. This program is a non-contributory benefit, meaning no payment or reduction in pay is required to receive these benefits. Federal benefits received: Montgomery GI Bill chapter 1606; up to $333 per month to offset college cost of attending college fulltime. Other Air National Guard Education Benefits for members enlisting for six years in a critical skills job may be available based on current incentive programs. These benefits include: Montgomery GI Bill kicker up to $350 per month for full-time college enrollment, Student loan repayment program; up to $20,000 paid throughout enlistment. If you have prior military service and elected the active duty MGIB, you may still take advantage of this benefit up to a maximum of 48 months of combined benefits at the full-time rate.
