In 2006, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP) developed the “Interdepartmental Tribal Justice, Safety, and Wellness Session” (TJSW), in response to tribal recommendations to create a public safety and public health environment that reflects tribal governments‘ needs; and, to design a communication and education forum to promote opportunities to work together across the federal agencies and with Indian tribes, and tribal organizations.
On October 3, 2012, the TJSW Session 15 will immediately follow the Violence Against Women Act Annual Tribal Consultation Session and the Department of Justice Grants Session.

A Listening Session on Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA) Tribal Justice Plan (TJP) Implementation Strategy will be held to provide an overview the Plan, update of accomplishments to date and will seek input on priorities, promising practices and approaches and key partners that Tribes recommend to support implementation.

Presentations and focus group discussions to support the work of three of the TJP Workgroup Subcommittees: Alternatives to Incarceration, Tribal Justice Systems Infrastructure (Building and maintenance, operations and programs) and Managing High Risk Offenders and their Reentry. These meetings will also seek input on cross cutting strategies for federal agencies to communicate, and coordinate technical assistance, training and funding strategies most effectively with Tribes. This meeting is strategically coordinated to align with the critical needs of tribal justice systems to be discussed in the Office on Violence Against Women’s Consultation and the Department of Justice’s Consultation on the Department of Justice Grants.
On October 4th, the TJSW will also include sessions on Native American veterans, Sexual Assault, Suicide Prevention, Juvenile Justice, hate crimes, the Justice Department’s Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) practitioner’s assessment session, federal grant writing, and conducting comprehensive planning for tribal justice systems. By focusing on these critical and interrelated needs with tribal governments and their communities, TJSW#15 continues the tradition of strong interagency collaboration to support tribal capacity to effectively address public health needs and prevent and respond to public safety concerns. The focus areas in TJSW #15 are part of the larger work of the TJSW partners. Beginning with just two federal agencies, the TJSW has since welcomed 12 federal partners to join in a collaboration to continue these efforts with Tribal Leaders and tribal policy representatives as an ongoing forum for dialogue on tribal justice, safety and wellness issues. These sessions have provided training for over 5,500 participants nationally. Today, the TJSW federal partners include:

Who should attend?
Tribal Leaders, especially for the Consultations and TJP Listening Session. For the breakout sessions and focus groups, adult and juvenile justice officials, including tribal judges, prosecutors and defenders; other court and peace maker practitioners; corrections (jail and probation) managers and staff; reentry coordinators; grant managers; administrative staff; health and behavioral health professionals including treatment providers and prevention partners; advocates and community partners; administrators; and federal agency representatives should attend.
When is the Listening Session on TLOA Tribal Justice Plan for Implementation?
Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. This is followed by a day of focus group meetings (9:00 – 3:00) with other presentations on coordinated issues including tribal action plans, JDAI and federal budgeting processes to support additional input from tribal and juvenile justice practitioners.
