PTO COMMISSIONER TO ADDRESS NATIONAL ACADEMIES SEMINAR ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Q. Todd Dickinson, Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks will be the keynote speaker on February 2, 2000 at The National Academies two-day seminar on intellectual property rights. The National Academies is comprised of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council -- nonprofit organizations that work under an 1863 congressional charter, providing independent advice to the nation on matters of science, technology, and medicine.

Commissioner Dickinson's speech will address the important role of the patent system in a knowledge and information based economy. The two-day conference, "Intellectual Property Rights: How Far Should They Be Extended?" will bring together Federal judges, executive branch officials, practitioners, corporate executives, legal scholars, and economists to discuss the effects of intellectual property protection on innovation and economic performance.
