Submission Windows: Unsolicited CHE Proposals

NEW! The Division of Chemistry Is Moving to a Single Proposal Submission Window for Unsolicited Proposals and Discourages Multiple Submissions

Beginning in 2012, Chemistry programs will move to a single window.  Depending upon the program, the window will be in either September or October. Principal Investigators (PIs) may submit to the following programs between September 1st and September 30th:

  • Chemical Catalysis - CAT
  • Chemical Structure, Dynamics and Mechanisms - CSDM
  • Chemical Theory, Models and Computational Methods - CTMC
  • Chemical Synthesis - SYN

Proposals may be submitted to the following programs between October 1st and October 31st:

  • Chemical Measurement and Imaging - CMI
  • Chemistry of Life Processes - CLP
  • Environmental Chemical Sciences - ECS
  • Macromolecular, Supramolecular and Nanochemistry - MSN

Note that if the last day of a submission window falls on a weekend or official federal government holiday, the deadline is always the following business day, at 5 pm local time.

The CRIF, CAREER, REU, MRI and the Centers for Chemical Innovation programs and any other programs that specify the submission date in a solicitation are not affected by this change. PIs should continue to visit http://www.nsf.gov/div/index.jsp?div=CHE for the deadlines of these and other programs.

CHE discourages the submission of more than one proposal from the same Principal Investigator during the proposal-submission window. Note that proposals that are a duplicate of, or substantially similar to, a proposal already under consideration by NSF from the same submitter are subject to return without review. This also applies to proposals that were previously reviewed and declined and have not been substantially revised as well as to duplicates of other proposals that were already awarded.

MPS/CHE: Advice to PIs on Data Management

NSF has published a revised version of the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 11-1) that will require, in all proposals submitted , or due, on or after January 18, 2011, a supplementary document of no more than  two pages describing a Data Management Plan for the proposed research.  Fastlane will not permit submission of a proposal that is missing the Data Management Plan.  The Data Management Plan will be reviewed as part of the intellectual merit or broader impacts of the proposal, or both, as appropriate.   The goal is to provide clear, effective, and transparent implementation of the long-standing NSF Policy on Dissemination and Sharing of Research Results.

Each Division within MPS has developed a set of information items to provide guidance to the communities served by that Division in preparing a Data Management Plan that will meet the goals of the NSF plan.  For more information on the policy and process click here.

Strategic Directions

The Division of Chemistry Strategic Directions 2008-2012 document is available at http://www.nsf.gov/mps/che/CHE_StrategicDirections.pdf.

Submission Deadline Extended-November 7, 2012

Due to Hurricane Sandy and the resulting closures and power outages, the submission deadline for all unsolicited proposals from the CMI, CLP, ECS and MSN programs that would otherwise have been due by October 31, 2012 has been extended to Wednesday, November 7, 2012; 5 pm local time.

If you have any follow-up questions, please contact your Program Officer.
