Pilot program using eAppraisal to evaluate new hires

Ames Laboratory Human Resources department is expanding the eAppraisal process, through Halogen, to include a three-month performance evaluation for P&S and merit employees new to Ames Lab.  A pilot group consisting of three new hires and their supervisors is currently underway and will wrap up in the middle of September.

Integrating new hires into the workplace is essential to the Lab’s ongoing success of “creating materials and energy solutions.”  We can do this by decreasing turnover, increasing productivity and improving employee engagement so that new hires understand what is expected of them and how it impacts others and Ames Lab as a whole.

As you may have heard or read, employees make the decision whether or not to jump ship within the first six months of employment.  It takes too much time and effort to interview, hire and train employees to let this happen.

Performance management can and likely should take place daily between supervisors and their direct reports through informal conversations about work plans and progress.  The three-month performance evaluation is yet another way to keep the lines of communication open to ensure that performance is being managed and time and potential is being maximized each day.

P&S and merit employees new to Ames Lab and their supervisors will be invited and required to complete a three-month performance evaluation utilizing the eAppraisal system.  The process will mirror the annual evaluation which includes, but is not limited to, a self-appraisal completed by the employee as well as an appraisal completed by the supervisor.

The three-month performance evaluation provides a more formal opportunity for both the employee and supervisor to communicate about how things have gone thus far and what they will look like moving forward.  Tasks will be assigned with due dates and reminders will be emailed to those involved.  This new process is scheduled to kick off on October 1st.
