Online Colleges in Georgia (GA)

For a state nicknamed the Peach State, Georgia’s history can be considered tumultuous and bittersweet. The state was the last member of the thirteen colonies, was but also one of the first states to leave for the Confederacy in the Civil War. The Georgian Gold Rush led to a spike of migration to the state, and population pressure, among other things, triggered the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears, one of the darkest moments in U.S.-Native American relations. Today, Georgia has a thriving industrial and economic culture, boasting a progressive income tax policy that is lower than the rest of the U.S.

Georgia has also become progressive with its policies towards online schools. As of 20120, legislation passed to require every high school student to complete at least one online class before earning a diploma. Only a couple of other states, including Michigan, Florida, and Alabama, already ask all students to take online courses. As it is, online schools in Georgia have seen a rise in popularity, and with that has come more importance put on the creation of better web education. Georgia Virtual School (GAVS) is funded by the state’s Department of Education. Students enrolled in traditional high school can take their required online course through GAVS or make up credits. With over 100 offered classes, plenty of online learning resources, and access to the bwelest educators in the state, students can earn their high school diploma through an online program with ease.

Students wishing to earn a college degree through Georgia’s online schools are still eligible for the HOPE scholarship, which is funded through the state lottery. The only requirements to earn the financial aid are a high school degree or GED with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Recently, however, the scholarship was cut so that only high school students could apply, not those already enrolled in college.

The distance learning program at The University of Georgia is one of the best online schools Georgia has available. With Georgian pharmaceutical, education, and healthcare industries booming, certificates, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees are offered in those fields entirely online.

Georgia has made available online educational resources for each of its citizens. From the Digital Library of Georgia to an online encyclopedia, a database of Georgian government publications, a search engine for magazine and journal articles, and much more, there is no information that is unavailable to a Georgian student – and the future seems bright for web-based education.
