Hensarling Statement on House-Passed Legislation to Strengthen National Defense and Hold the President Accountable

July 19, 2012

WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) issued the following statement today regarding the passage of two pieces of legislation in the House this week: H.R. 5872, the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012, and H.R. 5856, the Defense Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2013.

“This week the House took action to support our brave men and women in uniform and hold the president accountable as the dark cloud of sequestration looms nearer. After the president’s failed policies amassed more debt in three years than was compiled in the previous 200 years combined, House Republicans believe it is long past time to stop spending money we don’t have. At the same time, we cannot and will not solve our national debt crisis by deliberately permitting a national defense crisis.

“We must defend our defenders. That is why House Republicans already passed legislation in May to replace the harmful defense cuts required, absent presidential leadership, under the Budget Control Act with specific, common-sense reforms that would reduce our record deficits without job-killing tax hikes. It is why we passed the Fiscal Year 2013 Defense Appropriations bill to fully equip our war fighters with the resources they need to succeed in their missions and defend our freedom. I expect my colleagues in the Democrat-controlled Senate to approve these bills for the sake of transparency in our government and certainty and support for our military.”
