Hensarling Statement in Support of Israel before Expected UN Vote on Palestinian "Statehood"

September 23, 2011

WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) issued the following statement today expressing support for the State of Israel in anticipation of the United Nations’ consideration of Palestinian “statehood.”

“As Israel stands for peace and freedom in a region of the world that knows far too little of both, America will always stand with her against those who deny and threaten her very existence. In the spirit of this deep and abiding friendship, I applaud the Administration’s intent to oppose any attempt by the UN to grant ‘statehood’ to the Palestinians who wrongly refuse meaningful peace talks with the Jewish state.

“Any possible ‘two-state solution’ must come through negotiating an agreement with Israel, not by seeking a purely symbolic vote within the walls of the UN headquarters. When the bid reaches the Security Council, the United States will be right to veto it. If brought before the General Assembly, the measure should be rejected by every member state that cares about the security and well-being of the Israeli people.”
