Aviano edges Vicenza in Italian affair

AVIANO, Italy - The Aviano Saints improved to 2-0 on the season by holding off their northern Italy rivals from Vicenza, 13-12, on Saturday.

The Saints took a 13-0 halftime lead. Andrew Bert caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Mike Trujillo to open the scoring. Alex Ramos broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

But Vicenza (0-1-1) came back with a touchdown from Terell Gundy and Derrick Grice’s score moved the Cougars within a point. Aviano blocked the extra point, though, and held on for the victory. Gundy had 85 yards on 22 carries for Vicenza, which travels to Ansbach next weekend. Kenney Coulter had eight tackles for the Cougars on defense, Malcolm Harris had five and Mario Molino intercepted a pass.

Ramos had 96 yards on 13 carries for Aviano. Jonathan Corriere had 11 tackles and Jamal Thomas added an interception. The Saints host Naples on Saturday.
