Officials: No Camp Darby connection to missing woman

There is no connection between the U.S. Army base of Camp Darby in northern Italy and an Italian military police investigation and search for a missing Italian woman, U.S. and Italian officials said Wednesday.

A news report by Adnkronos International that was posted to the Stars and Stripes website earlier this week had said police were digging at the Camp Darby mlitary base, but officials said that was incorrect.

The search Monday for Roberta Ragusa took place in a wooded area roughly one kilometer from the perimeter of Camp Darby, said a Carabinieri official from the Camp Darby office.

“A translation error between the Italian language report and the Adnkronos English language verson (sic) appears to be the cause of the mistake,” Army spokesman Grant Sattler said in a comment posted to the Adnkronos report on Stars and Stripes’ website. “Again, no connection with any U.S. military installation in Italy.”

Italian investigators have searched for Ragusa, 45, since her disappearance from her home in Gello di San Giuliano Terme, near Pisa, eight months ago, according to the Italian news service ANSA.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Carabinieri officials from Pisa declined to say why they searched the wooded area around Camp Darby, located about 15 miles from her hometown.

The woman’s husband is the sole suspect in the case, ANSA reported.
