Brookhaven's Steve Peggs Named New Head of LARP
Last month Steve Peggs of Brookhaven National Laboratory became the new head of
the U.S. LHC Accelerator Research Program.
He took over from Fermilab's Jim Strait, who was LARP's acting program

leader and head of its construction project. Strait now heads Fermilab's
Particle Physics Division.
Four U.S. laboratories - BNL, Fermilab, LBNL and SLAC - collaborate with CERN's
Large Hadron Collider through LARP. Its mission, Peggs said, is "making sure
that the best accelerator physicists in the U.S. are available to help with
LHC commissioning," while at the same time developing and preserving U.S.
resources and know-how in the field. LARP's mission also includes R&D for
future LHC upgrades, Peggs said. "We want to help the LHC make more luminosity,
earlier," Peggs said.
Peggs is a member of the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel. He has been at
Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider since 1992, and has also been
adjunct faculty at State University of New York, Stony Brook. In the past he
held posts at CERN, the SSC and, from 1989 to 1992, at Fermilab, where he
was cospokesperson for the Nonlinear Beam Dynamics experiment at the
Tevatron.

The summer is over, and so are the games of the Fermilab Summer Volleyball League.
Eight teams began the season on June 7, and during the last week of play four
of them still had the chance to finish at the top. When all games were over
and the sand was shaken out of the clothes, the teams of captains Randy Zifko
and Tony Vaiciulis had recorded the highest number of wins over the course of
the season. Both teams were declared to be champions -- a repeat of last year's
finish when the two teams had tied as well.

Electric plant eyed for east side site
BATAVIA -- The Batavia City Council has taken the first step--and spent the first $1.1 million--toward building a new electrical substation in the east side industrial section.
Aldermen unanimously voted this week to purchase a 7.73-acre parcel on Hubbard Avenue in the Batavia Business Park as the site for the proposed substation. That land is just south of the Suncast manufacturing plant and across Kirk Road from the future home of Diamond Star factory.

Flu Prevention
|
|
With the shortage of flu vaccine this year, it is certain that many healthy
adults are going to have trouble getting a flu shot. Whether or not you are
successful in getting innoculated, here are some tips to help you minimize
your risk of infection and reduce spread of the flu bug to others.
- Don't run yourself down; eat right, exercise and get plenty of rest.
- Wash your hands often. One of the most common ways people catch the flu
is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated
with a virus.
- Use disposable tissues to wipe or blow your nose.
- Use proper cough etiquette. Turn your head and cough or sneeze into a
disposable tissue or the inside of your elbow if a tissue is unavailable.
- Avoid close contact with people when you are sick. The most
important thing is to stay home until you're better, especially if you
have a cough and fever. You should stay home until a fever has passed for
24 hours to prevent spreading.
In addition, there are a number of antiviral drugs that can be helpful
in dealing with the flu. They are amantadine (Symmetrel), rimantadine
(Flumadine), oseltamivir (Tamiflu), and zanamivir (Relenza).
These drugs can be used to prevent infection following acute exposure
or as a general precaution for the entire flu season. They can
also be useful in treating an infection once it has occurred.
You should talk with your private doctor to determine whether these
drugs are right for you.
Have a great day and let's work safely all week!

Spam Assassin Software
On the morning of Monday, October 11, the Computing Division will upgrade the
Spam Assassin software on the mail filtering machines. This new version
of the software should be more effective in correctly tagging the
current waves of spam. Due to the redundancy built into the mail system the upgrade should have
no noticeable service interruptions.
