If you have diabetes, always keep your feet in mind.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
If you have diabetes, nerve damage can cause you to lose feeling in your feet, making you more likely to suffer foot injuries that may lead to lower-limb amputation.
But there is a lot you can do, for example, check your feet daily because even if you do have problems, you may not feel any pain. look out for cuts, sores, or infected toenails.
Wear shoes and socks, even indoors, because it’s easy to step on something and hurt your feet. And keep your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control to prevent or delay foot and other diabetes-related problems.
