A Breath of Fresh Air Reached Broward County

Property owners, housing managers, realtors, and residents of Broward County attended a smoke-free housing seminar to learn about the benefits of adopting smoke free policies in multi-unit housing structures.

The benefits of adopting smoke free policies in multi-unit housing structures were recently shared with property owners, managers, realtors, and residents of Broward County, Florida

A smoke-free housing seminar, hosted by the Broward Regional Health Planning Council (BRHPC) in July in Dania Beach, provided an opportunity for participants to not only learn more about adopting smoke free policies in multi-family housing but also a chance to interact directly with those who have succeeded in their efforts.

In a joint effort between HUD, the American Lung Association in Florida, BRHPC, and the Transforming Our Community’s Health Initiative, the “A Breath of Fresh Air” Smoke Free Housing Seminar educated, enlightened, and encouraged over 50 Broward property owners, managers, realtors, and residents on the benefits of adopting smoke free policies in multi-unit housing structures.

The discussion group featured a local legal expert, a panel of housing professionals who have already implemented smoke-free policies in their Florida properties, and a representative from Nova Southeastern University’s Area Health Education Center, which provides a free cessation program to the public. HUD Miami Field Office staff, the Public Housing Authorities of Fort Myers and Sarasota and the Director of Field Operations for Elderly Housing Development Opportunities Inc. participated in the housing panel.

HUD’s participation in the seminar and partnership with the American Lung Association and TOUCH program assisted in promoting and encouraging a smoke free housing environment with the housing stakeholders that HUD supports through its various multi-family housing programs.
