Burton Condemns Administration's Decision to Kill the Keystone XL Pipeline
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following statement in response to President Obama's decision to derail construction of the Keystone XL pipeline:
"Construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, to Steele City, Nebraska, and to the United States Gulf Coast through Cushing, Oklahoma, is a $7 billion energy project that will enhance the energy security and economy of the United States. By rejecting the permit to construct the Keystone XL Pipeline, President Obama has once again chosen to campaign rather than lead; bowing to a fringe minority for campaign cash and support rather than making the hard decision for the best of the whole country.
"Typically, the President tries to blame Republicans for his bad policies but the truth is that the Keystone XL pipeline is not a new idea. The Keystone XL pipeline has been subjected to three years of intensive environmental review, and was deemed environmentally sound by the U.S. Department of State in its August 26, 2011, Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). The State Department's report also concluded that the pipeline would create up to 6,000 jobs during construction alone; although most experts suggest the true figure is closer to 20,000 direct jobs and 118,000 indirect jobs. These are real jobs not like the thousands of imaginary jobs "saved" or "supported" by the President's $800 Billion stimulus boondoggle.
"It's fitting that the President is in Disney World today talking about jobs because his decision to kill the Keystone XL Pipeline just proves that when it comes to creating jobs the President is living in a fantasy world."
