Democrats Pass Taxpayer Funding for International Abortion Finance Programs
July 9, 2009 - Following passage of the 2010 Foreign Operations Appropriations Act (H.R. 3081), Congressman Trent Franks (R - AZ) issued the following statement: "In addition to being filled with copious amounts of unnecessary spending at a time of financial crisis, this year's foreign operations appropriations bill is being used as a conduit through which pro-abortion Members of Congress can funnel taxpayer dollars into organizations that actively promote abortion worldwide. In his first week in office, President Obama made good on his campaign promise to abortion activists and profiteers by overturning the Mexico City Policy, which prevented taxpayer dollars from flowing to overseas organizations that promote or perform abortions. Today, Congress went a step further, passing an appropriations bill to direct $60 million to the United Nations Population Fund and $648 million to international 'family planning' projects such as those carried out by International Planned Parenthood Federation, an organization firmly committed to the belief that abortion-on-demand must be made universally available. These projects' seemingly benign names belie their insidious natures. The United Nations Population Fund, for example, has in the past been linked to China's deplorable one-child regulation, which has led to countless coercive abortions at the hands of the Chinese government, the abandonment and death of millions of Chinese baby girls, and instances of forced sterilization. 'Family Planning' has long been a term used by the abortion industry to soften their appeals for funds to line their pockets through abortion-related programs and procedures. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged the true nature of "family planning" programs, stating earlier this year that access to abortion is an important component of so-called "family planning" and "reproductive health" programs. |
