I am struggling in school due to an injury I sustained while in the military. How can I get the help I need to succeed academically?

The most difficult part for many student Veterans is actually asking for the help he or she needs. Fortunately, there are a number of services and resources designed to assist students who may be struggling academically or otherwise (whether in person or virtually).

Some suggestions if you are struggling academically include:

  • Contact your school’s Office of Disability Services (sometimes referred to as Disabled Student Services). These offices work closely with the Veteran Service offices on campus to ensure student Veterans with acquired injuries are receiving the help and support they need.
  • The Job Accommodation Network (www.AskJAN.org) offers many resources on academic and workplace accommodations.  JAN’s Searchable Online Accommodation Resource (SOAR) is a searchable system designed to let users explore various accommodations for work and educational settings.  You can also contact JAN directly to speak to a representative for a free, confidential consultation. Additionally, JAN offers candid and easy-to-understand information about different disabilities and/or acquired injuries, and how they may impact you at school or at work.

If you are struggling with feeling like you “fit in” on campus, reach out to the school’s Veteran Service Office. Many colleges and universities have active student veteran groups designed specifically for this purpose – to make sure student veterans have the support system they need to be successful in all aspects of college life.
