In case you hear this in the news - there was an earthquake off the coast of the Philippines which generated tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific. All Seabees in the Philippines are accounted for and are on the opposite side of the island, so our Seabees are safe. All tsunami warnings, with the exception of the Philippines and Indonesia, have been cancelled and there are no expectations of a tsunami where our Seabees in the Philippines are.

    Very Respectfully,

  37. PREVENTION AFTER THE STORM
Typically after any major weather event, there are several items that everyone should be concerned with in order to maintain health. The top five of these concerns should be our water, food, sewage, disease carrying insects such as mosquitoes and, mold growth in dwellings. We should pay close attention to all of these items even if the weather event is minor.
    ...
Water is among the most important resource and should be carefully monitored. Do not use water from the tap if you had any interruption of service during the event which may indicate breaks in the lines or a foul smell or unusual color. If you must use tap water you should boil it first. While this event created no concern for contaminated water supplies, during larger events, you may receive warnings afterward to boil water or refrain from using tap water and should comply with these warnings.
Food is the next item of importance which is often affected by weather events. Power outages typically cause many food items to thaw unintentionally. If items in your freezer have partially thawed, do not refreeze them. Use them immediately or discard them. Items that thaw and are refrozen may carry bacteria that can cause disease. Do not use any item that you suspect has been stored above 40 degree F for more than 4 hours. Food borne illness is a major concern after weather events and is easily prevented by simple precautions such as these.
Flooding often causes sewage to back up in drains within our dwellings. If you noticed this during a weather event, you should sanitize your sinks and floor drains with bleach and water mixed in a container of 1 part household bleach and 10 parts water. This should kill off any disease causing bacteria that may contaminate your food during preparation.
Disease carrying insects such as mosquitoes often reproduce to large numbers after flooding occurs. The most effective method of control is the eliminations of the sites where mosquitoes lay their eggs. This commonly occurs in containers within you yard such as cups, cans, old tires, buckets, etc. After weather events, all containers which hold water should be dumped to eliminate the mosquito breeding sites. This reduces numbers of new mosquitoes and decreases risk to you and your family. Other control methods that reduce risk are keeping lawn and vegetation trimmed back. Mosquitoes choose sites with thick vegetation or high grass to rest prior to and after feeding. By reducing breeding and resting sites in your area you reduce the amount of pesticides needed to control mosquitoes around your home.
Mold is another concern after storms. Loss of power and ventilation is a common occurrence. The increased humidity in our environment and possible leaks in roofs and walls creates a prime area for mold to grow within our homes. While mold does not cause disease, many people are sensitive to it through allergies. If you are concerned with mold within your home, the best method for controlling it is to dry the area out by repairing leaks and ventilating the area.
The health of our personnel and their families is our top concern. We ask for your assistance in decreasing risk after weather events by exercising some of the simple methods above. For questions or concerns for health related items on CBC Gulfport feel free to call Preventive Medicine at 228-822-5729. (rcm)

I ask everyone to exercise caution, especially if you are engaged in clean up from the storm. Employ good Operational Risk Management and use your Personal Protective Equipment!
