Rear Admiral (Select) Andy  "Woody" Lewis


Rear Adm. (select) Lewis is a native of Los Altos, Calif., and a 1985 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He was designated a naval aviator in April 1987.

Lewis’ command tours include Carrier Air Wing Three deploying in USS Harry S Truman , Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 aboard NAS Oceana, and VFA-15 deploying in USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

Lewis’ sea tours include a division officer tour in Attack Squadron 72 deploying in USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), as an exchange pilot/tactics instructor in 800 Naval Air Squadron deploying in HMS Invincible (R05), and as a department head in VFA-192 deploying in USS Independence (CV 62). Other deployed tours have been as a battle director at the Combined Air Operations Center in Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar and as the Maritime Operations Center Director at Naval Forces Central Command, Bahrain.

Ashore, Lewis served as an Instructor Pilot in VT-23, as a branch chief at the Joint Warfare Analysis Center, and as the executive assistant to the Chief of Naval Air Force. Presently, he serves on the Joint Staff.  He is a graduate of Air Command and Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College, and holds a Master of Arts degree in Military History from the University of Alabama.

Lewis has flown over 100 combat missions in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Deny Flight, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. He has accumulated over 5,200 flight hours and 1,100 arrested landings. He was the recipient of the Air Pac Pilot of the Year in 1996.

Lewis’ personal awards include the Legion of Merit (four awards), Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (seven Strike Flight and four Individual with Combat “V”), three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (two with Combat “V”), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as various service and campaign awards.
