Vice Admiral Charles W. Martoglio

Vice Adm. Martoglio was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1978 after graduating from high school in West Hartford, Conn.  His first sea assignment was aboard USS Somers (DDG 34) where he served as gunnery and missile officer, 1st lieutenant, and main propulsion assistant. Completing his surface warfare qualification aboard Somers, Martoglio was then assigned to Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group 5 as flag lieutenant. Martoglio’s next at-sea assignment was as weapons officer aboard USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). A plankowner in Bunker Hill, he also served for 18 months as the ship’s operations officer.

Martoglio then served as the commissioning executive officer, USS Barry (DDG 52), the first of the Arleigh Burke-class of destroyers to be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. Martoglio commanded USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) during the ship’s first deployment to the Persian Gulf in 1997, and the ship and crew won two Battle “E” Awards during his tenure in command.  Martoglio served as commander, Destroyer Squadron 23, and as sea combat commander for the Nimitz Strike Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Martoglio also commanded Carrier Strike Group Seven and the Ronald Reagan Strike Group during its 2007 deployment to the Western Pacific.

Martoglio’s shore tours have included serving as executive assistant to Commander, Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet; assistant branch head, East Asia/Pacific Branch, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; military assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Requirements; a division director at the Navy Warfare Development Command; the senior Mahan Scholar at the U.S. Naval War College; special assistant, then executive assistant, to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations; as executive assistant to Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command; as the director of Strategy and Policy on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations; as the senior military assistant to the Secretary of the Navy; as the director for Operations at the U.S. Pacific Command in Honolulu; and as the chief of staff to Commander, U.S. European Command. Martoglio currently serves as the deputy commander, U.S. European Command.

Martoglio graduated with highest distinction from the U.S. Naval War College with a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal (with a bronze oak leaf cluster), the Legion of Merit (with a silver star and one gold star), the Meritorious Service Medal (with four gold stars), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with gold star), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a variety of unit and campaign awards.
