There will be a pre-conference site tour on the afternoon of Sept 24th of the AES Laurel Mountain wind and energy storage facility. This annual wind forum is held to examine the barriers to wind energy development and potential solutions for reducing these barriers. Updates on wind energy-related issues around the state are also included in this forum. This event will be informative for, among others, academia, electric utility representatives, wind energy developers, utility and environmental regulators, consumers and consumer advocates, environmentalists, and economic development representatives. Registration is required, but there is no fee to attend.

Webinar on Improving Methods for Estimating Fatality of Birds and Bats at Wind Energy Facilities
Date: 9/26/2012
This information was last updated on 9/11/2012
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. PT
This webinar will present results from a CalWEA-sponsored, California Energy Commission-funded study to increase the accuracy of methods for estimating the number of bird and bat fatalities associated with wind energy facilities, including an improved equation developed to adjust mortality observations. Presenters will review new data on the time-dependency of the probability of bird and bat scavenging and removal (carcass persistence) and detection by searchers (searcher proficiency), as well as assumptions and bias of four existing fatality estimation equations. Focusing primarily on small birds and bats, the study offers important insights and implications for experimental designs and field monitoring recommendations at wind facilities. Visit the California Wind Energy Association website for log-in information.
