Describes the specific medical conditions causing deaths in local jails nationwide during the eight-year period, from 2000 to 2007. This report presents comparative estimates and mortality rates for the leading medical causes of mortality by gender, age, race, Hispanic origin, and the length of time served in jail. It also presents detailed statistics on the causes of death, including suicides, homicides, and accidents. Mortality as related to the size of the jail is also discussed. Jail inmate death rates are compared to rates in the general U.S. resident population using direct standardization.
