Limits State-funded administrative costs & executive compensation

The State of New York directly or indirectly funds with taxpayer dollars a large number of tax exempt organizations and for-profit entities that provide critical services to New Yorkers in need. The goal of these proposed regulations is to ensure that taxpayers' dollars are used properly, efficiently, and effectively to improve the lives of New Yorkers. It is imperative that New York State and the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) ensure that state funds and state authorized funds are optimized for the purpose of providing services to those individuals who are in need of them.


Proposed lawsuit settlement will alter home health Medicare reimbursement rules

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week filed a proposed settlement in the class-action lawsuit, Jimmo vs. Sebelius, which challenged the long-standing "improvement standard," which the lawsuit contends illegally denies Medicare benefits for a range of skilled nursing and home health services.


Elder Abuse Prevention Grant Awarded to NY State Office for the Aging

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) Acting Director, Greg Olsen announced today that his office has received a three-year, $1 million Elder Abuse Prevention Interventions Grant from the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL) to initiate and test a program to combat financial exploitation and elder abuse in New York.

Governor Cuomo Announces Statewide Partnership To Improve Access To Legal Services For Vulnerable New Yorkers

PartnershipForLegalServices Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a partnership between the State Office for the Aging, the State Office of Court Administration and the New York State Bar Association to find new ways to better provide affordable legal services to senior citizens and New Yorkers with disabilities(External Link).


Two Part Webinar Will Cover Information about Affordable Legal Services

The State Office for the Aging, the State Office of Court Administration (OCA) and the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) are joining in an historic partnership to examine how to provide affordable legal services to older adults with limited resources or limited ability to purchase legal services on their own, and individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. The partnership was facilitated by Attorney Robert Abrams, a long time practitioner and advocate in the field of elder law.

This collaborative effort will identify the legal needs and barriers to justice faced by older adults and individuals of all ages with disabilities. The State Office for the Aging, OCA and NYSBA will develop a strategic plan to more effectively use existing resources, including attorney pro bono programs, to target areas of greatest need.

NYS Aging Network Convenes for 16th Annual Aging Concerns Unite Us Conference

On June 5th and 6th in Albany, the 16th Annual Aging Concerns Unite Us (ACUU) conference was held bringing together New York State’s Aging Services Network to address issues of aging and share best practices to support healthy living for New Yorkers as they grow older.

The New York State Office for the Aging(NYSOFA) hosted an event at the state Capitol today to honor older volunteers(External Link) from across New York State. A group of about 100 older New Yorkers, accompanied by their families, friends and staff of county offices for the aging, attended the ceremony. Event Program and List of Honorees.




The Importance of Addressing Older Adults' Sexual Health

On April 12, 2012 NYSOFA sponsored a Webinar on the topic of Older Adults Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS for the 59 Area Agencies on Aging. Mark Brennan-Ing, PhD. from ACRIA and Richard Cotroneo and Clara De Sanctis of NYS Department of Health Aids Institute conveyed the importance of providers addressing the sexual health needs of individuals over age 60 based on data that indicates that greater than 50% of individuals aged 60-74 identify as sexually active. Yet, data from a recent survey of service providers for that client population demonstrate a gap in the knowledge and comfort level for addressing the topic of sexual health and HIV/AIDS with older clients.


Social Adult Day Services

Social Adult Day Services - This program model, also known as Social Adult Day Services Programs (SADS) is required to provide socialization, supervision and monitoring, personal care and nutrition to functionally impaired older adults in a congregate setting. They are uniquely suited to care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive impairments. NYSOFA is now making available information and technical assistance materials explaining the agency’s role in overseeing Social Adult Day Care Programs, assisting interested parties who are considering opening a social adult day care program and providing access to caregivers seeking to locate a program in their community.
