Army Leaders Discuss Mission Command KANSAS CITY, MO - Some of the US Army's top leaders, and military officers from around the globe met here Tuesday to discuss the emergence of the Army's newest and arguably most significant warfighting function. The Association of the United States Army hosted a professional development forum on the topic of "Mission Command," and kicked off the two-day event with introductory comments by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - The Command and General Staff College's Golden Pen Award program recognizes personnel assigned to the college for their literary achievements. The awards were presented Dec. 13 in Eisenhower Auditorium in the Lewis and Clark Center by acting CGSC Deputy Commandant Col. Michael J. Johnson.
16 December - Awards recognize top students of class 2011-02
Several members of the Command and General Staff College's Intermediate Level Education class 2011-02 were honored at the graduation ceremony Dec. 16. The General George C. Marshall Award was created in 1960 in honor of Marshall to be presented to the distinguished graduate in each regular ILE class. The award recognizes scholarship, pays homage to one of America's most honored Soldiers and serves as a lasting incentive to officers attending the college. The winner of the General George C. Marshall Award was Maj. Anthony W. Gore.

1 December - CGSC students train at Australian college
Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Eleven Command and General Staff students and two instructors travelled to Canberra, Australia, in November at the invitation of Commodore Richard Menhinick, commandant of the Australian Command and Staff College, to participate in the second half of the U.S. - Australia Exchange Program with the Australian Defence Forces. The first half of the exchange occurred in June of this year, when 14 Australians arrived at Fort Leavenworth to attend classes and participate in Exercise Eagle Owl.
1 December - SAMS graduation adds to pool of planners
Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Two planners who recently graduated from the School of Advanced Military Studies are now providing assistance to elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and working on a joint task force headquarters, U.S. Army Africa's commander said. Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg, himself a SAMS graduate, said planners under his command are getting real-world experience using the military decision-making process, lessons learned from military history and experience turning intellectual power into combat power. LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - U.S. soldiers serving overseas are counting on those working at Fort Leavenworth to guide the future of the Army, the fort's new commander said. Lt. Gen. David G. Perkins, a three-star Army general, on Tuesday became commanding general of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth.
Doctrine expert talks to CGSC staff, faculty
Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - When he was an instructor with the Combat Studies Institute, Walt Kretchik kept hearing the phrase, the "last war." Army leaders were always trying to fight the last war, Kretchik was told, they didn't consider current events and couldn't be innovative. "But it didn't make sense from the perspective of how armies train, how they organize ... what bothered me is that we're teaching this, we're teaching our students that this is exactly the way it is," Kretchik said Kretchik published a book, "U.S. Army Doctrine: From the American Revolution to the War on Terror," in September 2011 with some of his findings. He spoke to staff and faculty at the Command and General Staff College Nov. 10 as part of a professional development effort by the Faculty and Staff Development Division.
Center for Army Leadership wants survey responses
Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Soldiers are asked to fill out many surveys each year. But the Center for Army Leadership at Fort Leavenworth wants Soldiers to know that one survey coming out this month is too important to ignore. The Center for Army Leadership, or CAL, Annual Survey of Army Leadership, known as CASAL, is read at the highest levels and has brought actual changes to the Army. Although Soldiers might not have heard of the CASAL, they've certainly seen the results, said Command Sgt. Maj. Philip Johndrow, the former command sergeant major for the Combined Arms Center. For instance, all the recent discussions about "toxic leadership" in the Army started with last year's CASAL results, he said "That was a result of the survey, so you know your voice is being heard when you see it in the Army Times and all these other places," Johndrow said. "It's the talk of the town now."
Survey IDs need for civilian leader development
Washington, D.C. - Findings in a Center for Army Leadership annual survey indicate the quality of civilian leadership is favorable and appears stable, but improvements are needed in leader development. "While favorable doesn't mean perfect, there is always room for improvement," said John Steele, research team lead for CAL's 2010 Annual Survey of Army Leadership. Army civilians also believe improvements could be made in developing their subordinate leaders, building effective teams, creating a positive environment, leading by example, and communication. "To clarify, Army civilians perceive that their leadership is favorable. My interpretation of the data is that many of their perceptions did not change from last year to this year," Steele said
Mattox installed as CGSC's first ethics chair
Dr. John Mark Mattox was installed as the first Gen. Hugh Shelton Chair of Ethics at the Command and General Staff College Nov 7. As the ethics chair, Mattox has a visiting professorship, the first privately-funded position at CGSC, said Dr. Chris King, dean of academics at CGSC. The position was part of a $2.5 million gift to the CGSC Foundation by Ross Perot two years ago.
After months under water, airfield cleared to reopen
Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Fort Leavenworth's airfield runway has passed tests and was cleared to reopen Fort officials were concerned that flooding earlier this year could have damaged the runway. The Missouri River was flooded during the summer as a result of the Army Corps of Engineers release of additional water at Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota. Engineers said heavy rain and snowfall the previous winter was reason for the additional release of water. The river flooded many communities, with Iowa and Missouri sustaining much of the damage. 10 Years of Counterinsurgency in Afghanistan - Is It Working?

John Paganini, director of the U.S. Army's Counterinsurgency Center, explained how the counterinsurgency strategy being employed in Afghanistan is still the Army's strategy there, despite having no concrete end date, no measurable metric of success and awareness that resources are limited.
Students visit Poland to study genocide
Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Although a few officers had visited World War II concentration camps in Auschwitz, taking a class on site gave them a deeper understanding of what leads to genocide. Eight students in the Command and General Staff College Intermediate Level Education class 2011-02 visited Poland in September as part of a class, "Genocide and the Military Role: Identification, Prevention, and Intervention."

TRADOC chief wants emphasis on defining 'the profession of arms'
The Profession of Arms campaign is one of the most important initiatives in the Army, the commanding general of Training and Doctrine Command said. "I think it's very important that we as a profession take a very hard look at what is our profession. What are the guide posts for the future?" Gen. Robert Cone said Tuesday during a panel on the Army profession at the Association of the United States Army annual meeting. "What is the profession of arms? Do we want to be a profession, and if so, what does it take to be a profession? You can take the bedrock that comes from this particular campaign and build the Army of 2020."

Maj. Philip F. Johndrow. Johndrow relinquished responsibility of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth at a ceremony Oct. 3. He is retiring to the Fort Hood, Texas, area.

The General George C. Marshall Award was created in 1960 in honor of Marshall to be presented to the distinguished graduate in each regular ILE class. The award recognizes scholarship, pays homage to one of America's most honored Soldiers and serves as a lasting incentive to officers attending the college. The awardee is Maj. Richard A. Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The man tapped to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, addressed more than 1,000 graduating students June 10 on Fort Leavenworth.

Lieutenant General Caslen is currently serving as the Commander of the Combined Arms Center and the Commandant of the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. General Caslen is very successfully filling the big boots of General Petraeus and General Caldwell who served as the Commander before him.
The Hall of Fame lines the walls of the Lewis and Clark Center's atrium with photos, stories and even some medals dating back to before the Civil War. This week's inductees are Otto Paul Weyland, who was a major general in the Army and a general in the Air Force, and Army Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III.

Memorial Day at fort recognizes sacrifices of the past and present "However, Memorial Day has a much deeper meaning," he said. That meaning was evidenced in the rows of parallel headstones dotting the grounds. "They serve as a somber reminder that we are at war," he said. Caslen also said it was those who have given their lives in conflicts past and present who are the reason for the occasion. Combined Arms Center commander keen on development of leaders "This generation is learning differently; they're learning faster, they're more adept at complex thinking, and they have a tremendous experience base that they bring to this level of thinking," he said. "Learning is the result of taking the operational environment and creating a simulation, bringing it to the student and discussing what is actually occurring in theater, analyzing it based on the principles that were taught, then working through some very complex scenarios to develop the ability to think critically." Caslen meets media, describes Combined Arms Center's road ahead "The best leaders were those who were not only confident, not only cared, but probably the one intrinsic characteristic that they developed was the ability to develop and earn the trust of their subordinates and the trust of their superiors," Caslen said. "We have an organization where people trust each other primarily because of integrity and confidence."
