The Week Ahead

Wednesday, September 19

  • Last week before Lame Duck: Congress is expected to consider several bills, including legislation that would allow taxpayers to make donations to pay down the national debt when paying their income taxes; H.R. 6361, which excludes disabled veterans' service-related disability benefits from income calculations for federal housing aid; and H.R. 2903, which reauthorizes certain programs and activities of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
  • The House is expected to vote on a series of bills under suspension of the rules, including a resolution honoring the victims of last week’s attack on the American consulate in Libya.
  • Visitors to the office include Stop Abusive and Violent Environments, an organization that seeks to end domestic violence.
  • The House is expected to vote on H.R. 2903, which reauthorizes funding for the Urban Search and Rescue Response System and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Thursday, September 20

  • 9:30 AM: The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee holds a hearing entitled, “A Citizen’s Guide on Using the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act of 1974 to Request Government Records.”
  • 11:15 AM: Congressman Yarmuth calls in to the Mandy Connell Show on 84-WHAS Radio to discuss his work in Louisville and Washington.
  • Congressman Yarmuth meets with representatives from the Kentucky Credit Union League, YouthBuild USA, and the Commonwealth Fund and the Alliance for Health Reform.
  • 2:00 PM: The House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Homeland Defense, and Foreign Operations holds a hearing entitled, “SIGAR Report: Document Destruction and Millions of Dollars Unaccounted for at the Department of Defense Part II.”

Friday, September 21

  • The House is expected to vote on H.J. Res. 118, which disapproves of the Health and Human Services Department’s proposal to allow state waivers of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program work requirements. The Obama administration's proposed waiver program – which allows states to develop individualized work requirements for TANF assistance – will increase employment of those receiving benefits by at least 20 percent.
  • The House is also expected to vote on H.R. 3409, which would transfer to states the authority for managing coal-waste storage and certain water quality programs; bar the EPA from issuing rules on greenhouse gas emissions in association with efforts to reduce climate change; and create an interagency committee to review federal regulations.
