A year after popular uprisings began to sweep several North African authoritarian regimes from power, the United States Institute of Peace is deeply engaged in efforts to manage conflict and promote peace in the region. Steven Riskin, a Middle East specialist at USIP, will lead a public conversation on developments in the Middle East and USIP’s work at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at the University of South Carolina.

A year after popular uprisings began to sweep several North African authoritarian regimes from power, the United States Institute of Peace is deeply engaged in efforts to manage conflict and promote peace in the region. Steven Riskin, a Middle East specialist at USIP, will lead a public conversation on developments in the Middle East and USIP’s work at Champlain College on Friday, February 17 at 3:30 p.m.

Experts from the United States Institute of Peace, who have been working in the field  throughout the Middle East and North Africa in the last year, are available for comment on the progress of the Arab Awakening  and what still needs to happen to ensure stability in the region.

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has appointed Manal Omar as Director of Iraq, Iran, and North Africa Programs.  Omar will play a key role in USIP’s operational efforts in this region, particularly assisting key stakeholders and local populations through the difficult transitions.

The U.S. Institute of Peace has detailed Senior Vice President William Taylor to the Department of State to oversee the newly created Middle East Transitions Office. The transfer was effective September 6, 2011.
