REMOVING EXCESS COLOR FROM WHITE VINES

Proprietors of bonded vineries and bonded wine cellars:

Purpose. The purpose of this industry circular is to announce the extension of the experimental study for removing excess color from white wines, other than vermouth, by winemakers desiring to participate.

Background. Refer to Industry Circular No. 59-46 dated June 23, 1959,and 26 CFR 240.527.

Continuation of Experimental Study. The experimental study respect ing the removal of excess color from white wines is continued through June 30, 1961, under the procedure and conditions prescribed in Industry Circular No.59-46, dated June 23, 1959.

Evaluation of Study. It is anticipated that after evaluation of the experimental study we will be able to include, in Part 240, procedures for removing excess color from vines, sometime before the expiration of this extension. At present it appear that treatment under the regulatory provisions can be somewhat more limited than has been permitted under the experiment, since no indication of need for the maximum permissible treatment has developed.

Inquiries. Inquiries concerning this industry circular should refer to its number and be addressed to the office of your assistant regional commissioner (alcohol and tobacco tax).
