A Practitioner Perspective on the Importance of Research

Karen D. Carroll, Associate Director, Bronx Sexual Assault Response Team, New York
NIJ Conference 2010
June 14-16

Karen Carroll: As a sexual assault nurse examiner, I'm involved in the day-to-day operations. In other words, I provide services to women, men, boys and girls in the immediate aftermath of going through a severe trauma. And what we know based on research done by folks like folks at NIJ is that if first responders are compassionate, understanding and treat these victims with dignity, then they're more likely to go on with the rest of the criminal justice process. By having NIJ and having research funded, we can now prove this. So we can say it's not just what we feel in our gut, this is what we know to be true; based on research, we are having an impact. So it's real important that this research continues and that additional research is funded.
