Testing is critical to link people with HIV to medical care and support so that they can live healthier lives. People who are unaware of their infection are 3.5 times more likely to transmit HIV than people who are aware of their infection.

Testing is critical to link people with HIV to medical care and support so that they can live healthier lives. People who are unaware of their infection are 3.5 times more likely to transmit HIV than people who are aware of their infection.

Metrics Calculation

HIV prevalence and percentage diagnosed are estimated from cumulative HIV incidence using an extended back-calculation model (using both HIV and AIDS data, the time of first diagnosis with HIV, and disease severity at diagnosis) and estimated cumulative deaths.

 

Numerator: The number of those persons who are aware of their infection status. Estimates are based on diagnoses of HIV and AIDS from surveillance data.

Denominator: The number of persons infected with HIV.
