The Department of Justice today announced more than 200 grants to more than 110 American Indian and Alaska Native nations.

09/27/12 Pennsylvania, U.S. Virgin Islands Latest of 55 Jurisdictions to Substantially Implement Provisions of the Adam Walsh Act
The Justice Department’s Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) recently announced that Pennsylvania and the U.S. Virgin Islands are the latest jurisdictions to implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.

Acting Associate Attorney General Tony West today announced nearly $3 million in grants to improve access to criminal legal aid services.

Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Director Denise E. O’Donnell today announced more than $11 million in awards to address neighborhood-level crime in 15 locations nationwide.

At midyear 2011, a total of 2,239 inmates were confined in Indian country jails, a 5.7 percent increase from the 2,119 inmates confined at midyear 2010, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced today.

09/19/12 About 4 Percent of Children in U.S. Households Lived in a Household That Experienced Violent Crime in 2010
About 2.8 million children or 3.9 percent of all children in U.S. households lived in a household in which at least one member age 12 or older experienced nonfatal violent crime in 2010, according to a report released today by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).

08/02/12 Federal Agencies Convene Week-Long Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC
Focuses on Critical Youth Issues and Youth Leadership
This week, more than 200 American Indian youth and adult leaders from 53 tribal communities across the country convened at the week-long 2012 National Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC. Students arrived Saturday to attend the Summit which featured Federal officials from the White House and the Departments of Justice, Interior, Health and Human Services and Education. The Summit provided a unique opportunity for Federal officials to hear directly from tribal youth through discussions on topics such as education, health, cultural preservation, civic engagement, and leadership development.
