Geothermal Technology Application

According to the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) 2008 Geothermal Technologies Market Report, an estimated 110 MWe of geothermal capacity was installed in the United States during 2008, bringing the cumulative total to 3,040 MWe. Electricity generated from geothermal sources represents 0.36% of the total U.S. production and 12.13% of electricity generated from renewable resources.

NREL helps increase the use of geothermal power to meet the U.S. goal of 100,000 MWe by 2050 through analysis, modeling, and systems integration research and development.
