After competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2009, the University of Kentucky has joined forces with University of Louisville and Ball State University for Solar Decathlon 2012.
The team's mission is to design a low-cost, solar-powered disaster relief housing option that can be deployed easily after a disaster and function independent of the electric power system. The house can serve as the foundation for a permanent housing solution and offers net metering-compatible power systems that can be used as base power, expand with owner needs, and possibly support local community energy sharing. The design will provide for immediate disaster recovery needs while supporting flexible, long-term space use, growth, and community recovery.
