Several cardiac events after smallpox vaccination occurred in recent weeks. Based on this information, DoD and CDC recommend that people with known cardiac disease should not receive smallpox vaccination. Based on input from the American College of Cardiology and other expert advisors, we developed new screening criteria based on multiple cardiac risk factors.

These screening criteria are now ready for use and we revised the Initial Medical Notes (Screening Forms) accordingly. DoD updated our informational and educational products, with the revisions available from the hotlinks below.

New information becomes available on this topic frequently. Please subscribe to our listserv to receive email notices of major new developments.

As always, advise patients to get the care they need promptly. And don't forget to report adverse events in detail to VAERS.
