Event Description

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public meeting on the use of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in transportation safety on December 4 and 5, 2012. GIS is a rapidly expanding group of technologies and analytical techniques that uses geographically referenced data to support complex data integration, advanced statistical analysis, precise investigation, and effective visualization of data. The meeting will bring researchers and practitioners in transportation safety and GIS together to discuss how GIS data, technologies, and techniques are applied to improve transportation safety.  They will identify emerging themes, current challenges, and potential solutions in using GIS in transportation safety.  The meeting will include eight panels, with experts from government agencies, research institutes, non-profit organizations, and industry covering all modes of transportation.

Preliminary Program:

  • Day 1 (December 4, 2012, Tuesday)
    • Opening Panel:
      • advances in GIS data, technologies, and techniques critical to improving transportation safety
      • data limitation and challenges facing efficient application
      • geospatial initiatives and activities across all agencies at the US DOT
    • GIS Data and Technology Panel:
      • data standard, requirement, and sources critical to transportation safety
      • technological innovation in navigation and safety products
    • Focus on Highway Safety Panel:
      • integration of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and recognition
      • leveraging GIS data and technologies in traffic safety and law enforcement activities
      • use of GIS data in naturalistic and other highway safety research
      • error consideration in georeferencing police-reported crash data and identification of safety countermeasures
    • Focus on Aviation Safety Panel:
      • development in airport mapping standards and procedures
      • innovation in building a threaded data set of gate-to-gate aircraft activities
      • application of geospatial technologies in world-wide terrain databases and airport moving maps
      • using remote sensing and GIS technologies in developing flight obstruction databases
  • Day 2 (December 5, 2012, Wednesday)
    • GIS Application and Analysis Panel:
