Train As You Fight

MC4’s Train as You Fight initiative enables Soldiers to routinely use the tactical medical IM/IT system in a garrison environment and/or during field training exercises. Through MC4 use in garrison battalion aid stations and readiness exercises, deployable medical staff can build proficiency using a system they will again use down range, reducing the learning curve on the battlefield.

MC4 will work with units to implement solutions for capturing patient data in garrison electronically, as opposed to paper-based methods.

Background

Ninety percent of all active Army units, as well as many Reserve and National Guard units, have received pre-deployment classroom training on MC4 systems. They also have access to MC4 computer-based training. Yet, users often have insufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to best use MC4 in theater. Also, many garrison aid stations in the U.S. still record medical information on paper forms.

Challenges

MC4 users are mobile and transient. Units have insufficient time for pre-deployment training and when they do, it’s scheduled too far in advance of deployment. Providers (Professional Filler System) often arrive in theater after unit training occurs, without MC4 training, or are only part of a unit for 90 days. Reservists lack familiarity with DOD EMR systems, and many garrison aid stations in the U.S. don’t have access to AHLTA.

Way Ahead

Practice makes perfect. To gain proficiency in MC4, users must train as they fight by using MC4 in garrison aid stations and during collective unit trainings. Using MC4 in garrison aid stations also enables units to digitally add to a Soldier’s electronic medical history. It also provides logisticians with automated medical supply management capability and gives commanders greater visibility of population health data.

Objectives

The objectives of this initiative include:

  • Improve the operational readiness of units with MC4 use
  • Enable timely implementation of MC4 systems in a forward-deployed environment or during contingency operations
  • Provide a longitudinal EMR for service members while in CONUS
  • Provide medical logistics (MEDLOG) support
  • Provide a cost-effective answer to recurrent training needs, eliminating redundant new equipment training (NET) and minimize the need of new equipment fielding
  • Enhance the unit’s proficiency during combat training center (CTC) rotations

Quick Facts

  • 85 battalion aid stations in garrison use MC4
  • 79,000 electronic patient encounters captured using MC4 in garrison
  • MC4 is utilized in about 50 exercises annually, including Vibrant Response, Cobra Gold and Global Medic.
  • Seven active duty divisions are currently using MC4 in garrison battalion aid stations, including:

1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas

1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas

3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia

       2nd Infantry Division, Korea

4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado

82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina

101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky

Commanders

  • Greater visibility of population health data in garrison and heightened unit readiness

Systems Administrators

  • Quicker set-up time in theater and fewer trouble tickets

End Users

  • Proficiency in MC4 systems and less training required in theater
