The OSMRE/VISTA initiative is a collaboration between the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), and community nonprofit groups working in communities impacted by preregulatory mining.
The objective of OSMRE/VISTA is to support rural mining communities in making their communities healthier places to live and work.
Since 2001 OSMRE/VISTA has been placing determined, college-trained men and women for a year of service in rural mining communities to work with community members to build local capacity, promote economic development, foster environmental stewardship, conduct outreach and education, and gain professional development of OSMRE/VISTAs and their sponsoring organizations.
OSMRE/VISTA is operated as a part of the Build, Restore, Innovate, Develop, Grow, Empower (BRIDGE) Network.
