ARMY EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Science and technological education remains critical to our Nation&s continued success and security. For this reason, the Army has created the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP), which greatly expands and integrates an array of Army educational opportunities for the future generations of America's workforce and their teachers.   The AEOP is comprised of Army-sponsored research, education, competitions, internships, and practical experiences designed to engage and guide students and teachers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.

From kindergarten through graduate school, students of all proficiency levels, interests, and ethnic, economic, and academic backgrounds are encouraged to participate in real world experiences involving these important disciplines.

AMRDEC participates in the following AEOP programs (details below):

College Qualified Leaders (CQL)
Sponsored by George Washington University and the Department of Defense, the CQL program offers interested undergraduates/graduates the opportunity for a paid research internship in a DoD lab. Internships are available year round and for the summer only. There is no deadline for applying and applications are accepted all year.

eCYBERMISSION (the Science Fair for the Nation)
eCYBERMISSION is a unique Web-based science, math, and technology competition that allows students in grades six through nine to compete nationwide via the Internet and in Department of Defense (DoD) Educational Activities. It encourages and rewards a diverse range of proficiency levels, interests, and backgrounds. ARL employees serve as ambassadors, cyber guides, and virtual judges.

Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA)
Educational Partnership Agreements (EPA) are collaborations between Army Laboratories and Universities that promote curriculum development, faculty and student development, plus research and development opportunities at Army Facilities.

Faculty Research & Engineering Program (FREP)
The Army Faculty Research & Engineering Program (FREP) is administered year round in an effort to provide increased flexibility to government organizations and faculty members. The FREP objectives are to advance government scientific and engineering research and to stimulate the exchange of ideas among the academic community and government scientists.

Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS)
GEMS is a one to four week internship program offered to 8th – 12th grade students. Working in an Army Lab, students explore topics such as physics, optics, and robotics though scientific experiments, developing engineering design models, and building model rockets. Advanced courses in subsequent years build upon prior experience. Students participate in small group exercises that stress problem solving, computer simulation, and practical applications in science and engineering.

For more information or to register online, visit the AEOP website. Be sure to indicate "REDSTONE ARSENAL" when prompted. Indicate "REDSTONE ARSENAL" in the essay block found at the end of the application.

Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)
SEAP, managed by George Washington University for the Department of Defense, is an eight-week summer program designed to engage high school students in hands-on activities and student/mentor relationships that encourage careers in science and engineering. This program builds upon the foundations from prior years of laboratory experience reinforcing the idea that taking advanced classes now will provide opportunities for college. It allows students to apprentice in fields of their choice with experienced scientists and engineers. SEAP provides students with valuable knowledge and skills needed to make informed career decisions. Check out student testimonials and the AMRDEC Application.

DIVERSITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS
The Federal Government strives to be a model employer by building and maintaining a workforce that reflects the rich diversity of the Nation (see www.opm.gov/diversity/guide.htm). A diverse workforce in which the contributions of each member are respected and valued is AMRDEC&s most important asset. With this in mind, AMRDEC supports and participates in a number of programs designed to inspire and cultivate our future science and technology workforce.

These include:

Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA)
The National BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference is about opportunities to acquire and retain talent, to learn and network among the best and brightest technology minds in the country. Since 1986, the conference has served as an invaluable tool to recognize outstanding achievement of African-Americans in companies across America.

Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation (HENAAC)
HENAAC was established as a means of identifying, honoring, and documenting the contributions of outstanding Hispanic American science, engineering, technology and math professionals. Corporations, government agencies, academic institutions, the military, and the business community-at-large have submitted thousands of nominees over the last 19 years for this very prestigious recognition.
Mission: To educate, motivate and enable more students to achieve careers in science, technology, engineering and math; To engage families, educators and employers to support students in STEM careers; To inspire our nation through recognition of the achievements of Hispanics in STEM; To develop and leverage Hispanic STEM talent to play a leadership role; To lead collaboration and cooperation within the STEM community.

Historically Black Colleges/Universities and Minority Serving Institutions Program (HBCU/MSI)
Each year, AMRDEC invites science, technology, engineering and mathematics faculty from HBCU/MSI for a Capability Exchange Day. An overview is provided with a presentation of the research and development needs of AMRDEC, along with science and technology presentations by invited faculty members.

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
  • The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) strives to:Stimulate and develop student interest in the various engineering disciplines.
  • Strive to increase the number of minority students studying engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering or related fields and to obtain professional engineering registrations.
  • Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for Blacks and other minorities in that profession.
  • Function as a representative body on issues and developments that affect the careers of Black Engineers.
