"Jihad Jane," from eastern Pennsylvania illustrate how jihadists develop relationships online and work--in this case internationally--to plot attacks. We will hear from a panel of experts that monitor and study jihadi activity online who will detail the scope of this threat and how it can be overcome."

Mr. Daris Long
Private Citizen

·         Mr. Long is the father of the late U.S. Army Pvt. William Andrew Long, who was shot and killed in a 2009 terrorist attack on a military recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

·         Pvt. Long’s killer, Carlos Leon Bledsoe (Abdulhakim Muhammad), is serving life in prison after pleading guilty.  According to Bledsoe’s father, Mr. Melvin Bledsoe who testified at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing in March, Carlos Bledsoe grew up a Baptist in Memphis, converted to Islam, and became radicalized in Nashville.  He travelled to Yemen in 2007 where he was arrested by Yemeni authorities in 2008.  Following his deportation from Yemen in 2009, he attacked the Little Rock recruiting center, killing Long and wounding Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula.

Chairman King on the hearing:

“This critical hearing follows the three prior hearings that I have convened to examine the serious threat of radicalization within the United States. Thus far, in a series of hearings, we have examined the issue of radicalization within the Muslim-American community generally, radicalization in U.S. prisons, and radicalization by the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization, al-Shabaab.

“At this hearing, we will examine the homegrown terror threat from active duty personnel within the military itself, as well as the threat posed from outside the military.

“The deadly attack, and a planned second attack, at Fort Hood, the attack on the Little Rock recruiting center, and a number of other cases demonstrate the seriousness of this increasing terror threat within the military and to our military communities.  The brave men and women who volunteer to serve this country in combat zones overseas should not have to face the same dangerous threats here at home.”
