Ex-Im Bank History By Month: June

1935: The original Export-Import Bank of Washington and the Second Export-Import Bank merge to form one Export-Import Bank of Washington once officials realize that no business would be transacted with the Soviet Union. The first Ex-Im Bank was established specifically to promote trade with the Soviet Union. The second Ex-Im Bank allowed for trade with any country other than the USSR. R. Walton Moore is the first Chairman and George N. Peek is the first President.

1938: Ex-Im Bank finances a project to build roads in Haiti. The transaction, which is supported in an effort to minimize Germany’s growing economic influence in Latin America, is Ex-Im Bank’s first developmental lending effort.

1953: June 30—President Eisenhower’s Reorganization Plan No. 5 removes the Board of Directors. Ex-Im Bank is now run by a single Managing Director, Glen E. Edgerton. By August of the next year, the Board of Directors is reinstated through an amendment to the Export-Import Bank Act.

1964: Elizabeth S. May is sworn in as director of Ex-Im Bank. Previously the Dean of the College of Wheaton College, Dr. May was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson as Ex-Im Bank’s first woman director.

1997: Ex-Im Bank supports a new OECD arrangement to set minimum exposure fees.
