Vehicle Crash DemonstrationVehicle Crash Demonstration

The Vehicle Crash Demonstration (VAD) is a re-creation of fatality and/or injury vehicle crashes coordinated by MSA Safeguards & Security. Participants include the Hanford Fire Department, Benton County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol, Casaday Towing, Pasco Auto Wrecking, NorthWest Medstar, Dan Blasdel the Franklin County Coroner, John Hansens the Benton County Coroner, MSA Electrical Utilities, Hillcrest-Bruce Lee Funeral Home, and other participating agencies.

The unfolding of the scenario will include law enforcement officers giving sobriety tests and arresting the drunk driver, Hanford Fire Department rescuing victims from the wreckage using the jaws-of-life and administering on-scene medical care, the Franklin County Coroner examining the fatality victim, and the local funeral home placing the fatality victim in a funeral home coach. The entire scene will be narrated so the viewing audience will know what is being done and why.

EXPO staff and fellow employees will be playing the roles of the drunk driver and crash victims. Moulage kits will be used to simulate broken bones, blood, and other trauma wounds. Casaday Towing will be participating and providing the vehicles to be used in the crash demonstrations.

The VADs will be held in the indoor arena of the TRAC facility, which has a seating capacity of 3900.

The schedule for the demonstrations is as follows:

  • May 15, 2012: 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM & 5:30 PM
  • May 16, 2012: 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM & 5:30 PM

Using the VAD as a starting point, the Benton County Coroner, came up with an idea to develop a program to help teach young drivers about the consequences of their choices when it came to drinking and driving.  Over the past several years, a DVD was created and developed, with the help of many organizations and agencies, to show drivers what could happen because of their choices. The access the DVD, please go to  www.PLADD.org

If you have any questions about the VAD, please contact Vinnie Rizzo (509) 376-8383, or Roy Thompson (509) 373-6576.

Hanford Site Forklift Rodeo May 16th

HAMMER will once again host two Forklift Rodeos supporting the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board (GISHAB). The first rodeo will be held on May 16th in conjunction with the Health and Safety Expo at the TRAC in Pasco, WA. The rodeo will be used to qualify Hanford Site contractor employees for the GISHAB Material Handling Panel’s Central Region Forklift Rodeo.  Applications for the May 16th competition will be accepted through May 8th.  The Top four contestants and the Top Team (four members) will qualify to advance and represent their company and the Hanford Site at the Washington State Central Region Forklift Rodeo.  The Regional Forklift Rodeo, to be held at HAMMER, is scheduled for Saturday, June 2nd.  Participants at the Regional Rodeo will compete for top titles, prizes, and cash.

Although a fun event, the competition greatly stresses the importance of both safety and skill while operating forklifts.  Forklift operators are judged on their adherence to safety, skill of operation, and efficiency to navigate a challenging driving course that includes various tasks and obstacles.

If you are interested in competing in this year’s Hanford Site Forklift Rodeo at HAMMER on May 16th, please contact Bret Akers (Bret_M_Akers@rl.gov) by May 8th.  Additional information is available in the attached registration form/flyer.  The registration form can be found at this link http://msc.rl.gov/rapidweb/Training/index.cfm?PageNum=27.
