Course Information
Course Title: Basic Classification

Course Description: This course is intended for personnel who are new to the field or need an update on the classification process (GS-5 to 13). The course involves instruction, discussions and some written exercises to reinforce the concepts that are taught in the class. The course covers the following topics:
  • Classification Overview -- the purpose of the classification system; the types of decisions that are made; and the reference sources and tools used in the classification process.
  • Classification Process -- the different parts to the classification process including gathering and analyzing information. The participants are given practice exercises in determining the grades of positions.
  • Position Management -- addresses the structuring of positions, functions and organizations.
  • Supervisors/Leaders -- addresses how supervisory and leader positions are classified.
  • Classification Appeals addresses the DoD classification appeals process.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act addresses how FLSA decisions are made.
