Arghandab ALP commanders increase leadership training09/10/2012 Story by Staff Sgt. Nicole Howell
ARGHANDAB DISTRICT, Afghanistan-- Arghandab district Afghan Local Police had 13 checkpoint commanders from the west side of the Arghandab River Valley gather in Sakari Bagh village to attend a four-day commander’s course, Sept. 3.
Coalition forces provided instruction on tactics, logistics, communication, administration, accountability, and professionalism over four days to ease the transition from patrolman to leader.
“The reason we hold this class for commanders is because all commanders, from the west and east, need to operate in the same manner for efficiency,” said the special forces team member.
While this class was not mandatory, commanders made time to attend.
“In this class I have learned leadership, discipline, how to keep the people under control [in crisis situations], and how to respect other people,” said Noor Ullah, an ALP checkpoint commander.
During these classes, instructors reinforce the basics of leadership while incorporating new ideas and strategies that could make a normal day easier.
“We have given them 12 standard operating procedures for use before, during and after a patrol that will really help them,” said the SF team member. “They know how to get the job done, but they have not been relied upon to lead men. These SOPs are to help them and their guys.”
Nine ALP commanders from the east side of the river valley attended this same course less than a week before. Now, commanders from both sides of the valley have the same fundamentals in leadership and guidelines to assist them along the way. |
