Applying/recertifying for Secondary Dependency

Some documents are in .pdf format. Free viewer software is available online.

A number of entitlements for Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen are based on whether or not they have dependents. These entitlements and benefits include housing, travel, medical and dental support.

There are times when a member’s dependents include more than their spouse and children. Parents, stepparents, disabled children over the age of 21, wards of the court, and children under the age of 23 who are full-time students can add to the financial responsibilities of members. Preparing and submitting applications to have eligible persons included as your secondary dependents can ensure you receive the allowances you are entitled to.

The DFAS Military Pay Secondary Dependency Guide (PDF 226KB - 07/11) can help you prepare your initial application or annual recertification for submission to the appropriate DFAS office or, for Marine Corps, the HQMC in Quantico, VA.

Your personnel or finance office can help get you answers to secondary dependency questions. When you’re ready to submit your application or recertification, make sure you send it to the correct office.
