Mission
Tactical Aircraft Maintenance personnel are responsible for the condition of the Air Force's flying fleet, and for the safety of its flying team. Their job is to see that aircraft are operationally ready by performing scheduled inspections, functional checks and preventive maintenance both before and after flights, and ensuring that the aircraft has been properly serviced with fuel, hydraulic fluid and liquid oxygen. A Tactical Aircraft Maintenance member performs general maintenance and repairs for all parts of the aircraft, calling for the necessary specialists if and when a malfunction is detected.
Qualifications
For entry into this specialty, completion of high school or general educational development equivalency is mandatory. Applicants must also posses normal color vision and depth perception, be eligible to receive a Secret security clearance and earn an electrical score of 70 or higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery entrance exam.
Training
Prospective Tactical Aircraft Maintenance students attend an 88-day course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, where they learn the ins and outs of aircraft maintenance, support and service.
