Pelosi Statement on Memorial Day

May 25, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark Memorial Day, which will be observed on Monday, May 28:

“On Memorial Day, we remember all of the men and women who gave their ‘last full measure of devotion’ to the security of our nation, the defense of our values, and the freedom of families at home and on distant shores.

“In every generation, the members of our armed forces pay any price and bear any burden to preserve the safety of the American people and communities abroad.  Throughout our history, they have stormed beaches and fought in the trenches; delivered aid in the wake of disaster and served as our ambassadors around the world; defeated the forces of tyranny and strengthened the forces of liberty.  They have put their lives on the line to make the world safe for democracy.

“In war and peace, our service members have done everything asked of them with courage and bravery.  For all of us, they are heroes; for millions of Americans, they are parents, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors.  Together, as one nation, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf, never to return to the country they served.  We reaffirm, in the words once inscribed on Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, that ‘time will not dim the glory of their deeds.’

“In Congress, we must treat every day as Memorial Day.  By our actions and our laws, we must continue to serve all who serve us – those who died and those who came safely home.  We must always uphold our solemn pledge: just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind at home.”
