Tax Information

    The following information is for contractors and vendors who received payments for services provided to the Department of Defense (DoD). Employees of DoD that received a 1099/W2 should contact the points of contact listed at the bottom of this page.

    The Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS) Tax Office is responsible for the management of automated processes/procedures relating to:
    ·       Identifying, collecting, and reviewing data transactions subject to tax reporting
    ·       Coordinating and issuing IRS Form 1099s to ensure the highest possible level of compliance, including research and resolution of erroneous tax statements
    ·       Working with DFAS organizations, as well as other agencies affected by the issuance of tax documents and changes in tax compliance laws, regulations and directives  
    The DFAS Tax Office is located at DFAS Columbus, Ohio.  The office issues all IRS Form 1099s related to payments to vendors for data generated from the various Accounts Payable Systems within DFAS. 
    If you have received an IRS Form 1099 MISC, 1099 INT or 1099C from DFAS and have questions, you may contact us using one of the following methods:

    All inquiries must have the following information:
    a.      Employer ID Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN)
    b.      Contract number(s)/Purchase Order number (if applicable)
    c.      Contract/Purchase Order administered by: Air Force, Army, Marine Corp, or Navy
    d.      DFAS Site that issued payment(s) if known: Columbus, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Rome, or Limestone
    e.      Point of Contact
    f.       Power of Attorney – see statement below
    g.      Phone number including the time zone where the point of contact is located
    h.      Email address of the point of contact
    i.       Copy of the 1099 (if applicable)
    j.       Reason for inquiry including the tax year
     
    Due to the current Privacy Act, the request must be received from the recipient of the 1099. If the request is from a third party, it must be accompanied by a power of attorney or a signed letter from the 1099 recipient granting you permission to inquire about their 1099.
