The jump at Hall Drop Zone on Camp Bullis, located on the northwest side of San Antonio, took place before a crowd of former Geronimos who ran the gamut from current-day Iraq veterans to troopers who were part of the first combat jump in U.S. Army history on Nov. 8, 1942 at Tafarquay Airport on the hot sands of Oran, Algeria in north Africa.

The XVIII Airborne Corps, in conjunction with Womack Army Medical Center, hosted the Women's Equality Day celebration. Kate Campbell Stevenson, Broadway singer, actor and educator, used costume, song and short stories to highlight the accomplishments of women during the early 20th century. During her one women show "Petticoats in Politics," Stevenson recalled the suffragist movement through the words of Abigail Adams who wrote a series of letters to her husband John in 1776 detailing her frustration in being considered inferior and implored him to "remember the ladies."

There was a rodeo on Fort Bragg Aug. 10 through 14, but instead of bucking Brahma bulls there were billowy olive drab canopies. The participants substituted bright yellow static lines for steer-roping lariats. And, instead of cowboy hats, the competitors donned fire engine red rigger hats. The 2009 Rigger Rodeo brought in 10 teams from throughout the United States and Europe to determine the best rigger company in the Army.

Five psychological operations specialists assigned to the 4th Psychological Operations Group recently underwent a grueling, five-day assessment to determine if they are fit to serve and fight with the 75th Ranger Regiment. The week-long assessment was designed to observe how the Soldiers perform under stressful conditions. Kicking off the week was physical training as soon as the sun came up. Then it was on to the Ranger physical fitness test. After a quick breakfast and the chance to change into their duty uniform, the Soldiers and their evaluators moved out to Mott Lake for the combat water survival test.

Days before boarding a plane bound for a war zone, seven Fort Bragg Paratroopers became U.S. citizens in a ceremony Aug. 13 that concluded an unusually-short, two-day naturalization process. In this year's Installation Management Command-level Philip A. Connelly Award competition, two Fort Bragg dining facilities claimed victory and are now competing at the Department of the Army level for the title of Army's Best Dining Facility. From Fort Bragg, the Division Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division Dining Facility took the win in the large unit category while the Headquarters, Headquarters Company, United States Army Special Operations Command Dining Facility won in the small unit category.

"There hasn't been a day I've been here that I haven't thought about my time in the 82nd," said Greg Fulbright, who was in the division from 1983 to 1985. "I get to meet and talk to seven decades of troopers," Fulbright said. "I wouldn't trade the experience for anything."

This is the second deployment to Afghanistan for the 3,300-man unit, having returned from a 15-month deployment in April 2008. It will also be the second deployment for Staff Sgt. Richard Lyden, a section sergeant from Indianapolis, who through tear-stained eyes said it would be his hardest. He will be leaving behind his wife of three years, Colleen, and seven-month old Aubrey, his first child. "It's going to be hard," said Lyden, with Troop B, 4th Battalion, 73rd Cavalry Regiment. "But we will do good things. We will be out on patrols, working with the Afghans and meeting the people to help make their country better."

As U.S. Army Security Assistance Command makes the move to Redstone from Fort Belvoir, Va., one new addition is helping to smooth the way for others. Col. Tommy Lancaster became chief of staff for the organization June 22. With the organization both moving and restructuring as part of its BRAC-mandated relocation, Lancaster finds his duties divided between the two main locations. "Right now is very interesting because of our split operations," Lancaster said. "It's a challenge to work two headquarters at once." The move is going well. Lancaster estimates USASAC is about 18 months ahead of schedule. They have 85 people in place at Redstone and are expecting about 60 more. While helping the organization's staff move forward, Lancaster is working on what will happen to those not coming with them.

Dr. Mike Gruntman, professor of astronautics at the Viterbi School of Engineering of the University of Southern California, stopped by for a brief visit to the Office of the Command Historian on Aug. 17. Gruntman partnered with the office a few years ago. He was looking for historical footage of the Army's early pioneering efforts in space for his lectures. NASA's new administrator wanted to get one thing clear when he spoke for the first time in front of a heavily military-oriented audience Aug. 19 at the 12th annual Space and Missile Defense Conference - DoD and NASA are not two very different agencies. "We do things differently," said Charles Bolden, a retired Marine Corps major general who served as a pilot in Vietnam and as a NASA astronaut. "But our space activities give us a common foundation. Whether you work for NASA or the Army, space is important to our nation. It is critical." With that out of the way, Bolden had another misconception to dispel concerning President Barack Obama's interest in space and space exploration. "He has a vision for space. He has very interesting thoughts of the future of space," Bolden said. "A lot of people are afraid of what's going to come out of the Augustine Commission (an advisory committee on the future of the nation's space mission). I'm not."

Speaking to participants at the 12th annual Space and Missile Defense Conference at the Von Braun Center on Aug. 18, Air Force Gen. Kevin Chilton said the U.S. is operating in a "multi-polar environment with new threats and adversaries that challenge us. It makes us look at offense and defense in a different light." Chilton, a veteran astronaut of three space flights and the first former astronaut to receive four-star rank, is responsible for the global command and control of U.S. strategic forces to meet decisive national security objectives. The Strategic Command provides a broad range of strategic capabilities and options for the president and secretary of defense. STRATCOM mission areas include full-spectrum global strike; space operations; computer network operations; Department of Defense information operations; strategic warning; integrated missile defense, global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and specialized expertise to the joint war fighter.

Ermey came to post while filming the final episode of his new History Channel TV series, "Lock N' Load," which he calls, "'Mail Call' on steroids." Mail Call was Gunny's previous TV series in which he answered fans' questions about military life and weapons.

BRUSSELS, Belgium -The U.S. Army Garrison Brussels welcomed the Hon. Howard W. Gutman and his family for a Aug. 24 tour of the garrison compound and facilities. Ambassador Gutman was nominated by President Barack Obama to be the new U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium in June, and confirmed in that position by the Senate on July 24. FORT BENNING, GA - The cadre at the 30th Adjutant General Battalion aren't seeing double - they're seeing triple. That is, Joshua, Jacob and John Temple, identical triplets who arrived at the battalion Aug 17. The Temple brothers are the first triplets to pass through in more than 20 years, said Erma Thompson, chief of personal affairs, who has worked at the battalion since it opened on Sand Hill in 1983.

FORT BENNING, GA - Flashing traffic control devices have been installed at three locations near the intersection of Sunshine and Sightseeing roads to ensure an unobstructed radar signal to aircraft approaching Lawson Army Airfield from the south during inclement weather, the airfield division chief said this week.

It's official - ground has been broken for the last of the large-scale, BRAC-related construction projects coming to Redstone Arsenal. Arsenal and community officials gathered Friday under a tent adjacent to the Redstone Flying Activity at the airfield to break ground for a $46.5 million building project that includes the Rotary Wing Center Hangar Facility and the Redstone Test Center's new headquarters buildings. The hangar facility will be located at the airfield while the RTC headquarters will be in front of building 4500 on Martin Road. The groundbreaking, combined with Thursday's merger of the Redstone Technical Test Center and the Aviation Technical Test Center, "is truly a milestone event in the life of Redstone Arsenal, the Army and the state of Alabama," said Col. Steven Kihara, the new commander of RTC. "The official merger completely changes the face of aviation and missile testing and evaluation. The critical expertise to test and qualify now resides co-located with customers."

FORT BENNING, GA - The National Save A Life Tour made a stop at Fort Benning Aug. 17-21, delivering a message to Soldiers that featured a graphic video presentation depicting scenes of road carnage with personal stories of loss related to driving under the influence. Spectators also got to experience a drinking and driving simulator, while an open casket reserved for the next drunken-driving victim was among the displays.
