Membership in the club wasn't particularly a goal for the Ordnance School instructor, but he figured, "Why not'" He was already a competitor in a number of NCO of the month contests prior to his SAMC board appearance, so the train-up for a similar event would be no big deal.

    FORT LEE, Va. (Jan. 13, 2011) -- Anzio Annie's 70-foot barrel sets on tracks at Fort Lee Jan. 13. Annie, a K5 rail gun named for the World War II beachhead, was moved from Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. to Fort Lee as part of the Ordnance School's Base Realignment and Closure-mandated relocation. Annie's gondola and two 12-wheel rail cars made its way to the installation in November. All components will be assembled and eventually displayed at Fort Lee.

    The Army Materiel Command Band's Army Birthday concerts this past weekend in New York's Capital District has left thousands of area residents 'thinking' about the band members as great musicians due to three superb performances. But more importantly, area residents will 'remember' the band as great Soldiers due to their ability to use music to connect the community to its Army. Although the Albany area is not a military community as one would find at Fayetteville, N.C. that borders the Fort Bragg, the Albany area is nevertheless a community with military. And tucked away between U.S. Army Reserve and New York State Guard units is the U.S. Army Watervliet Arsenal. Given the Arsenal is the only active-duty Army post between West Point and Fort Drum, it was appropriate for the Arsenal to step up and share the Army's 235th Birthday with the local community.

    The history of the New York Army National Guard from the Spanish American War to Iraq and Afghanistan will be featured in a New York State Museum exhibit that opens May 28. Entitled "Citizen Soldier: New York's National Guard in the American Century" the exhibit includes almost 7,000 square feet of gallery space covering the service of New Yorkers through world wars, natural disasters, the 2001 terrorist attacks and Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. Wall panels, dioramas, photos, uniforms, equipment and weapons displays are being completed. The exhibit will also feature personal stories of Soldiers - past and present - including women Soldiers serving in the modern Guard's ranks.

    MT MORRIS, NY -- From starting fires to hunting bugs and snakes, Soldiers of the 249th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) did it all here Thursday, taking to the woods to brush up on their survival skills. About a dozen Soldiers from the aero medical evacuation unit took part in the training near the Mt. Morris Dam. Most of the Soldiers belong to flight crews of the unit, which rescues Soldiers wounded in battle or victims of natural or man-made disasters.

Donald Leinfelder told Watervliet Arsenal employees that an armor kit they may have assembled prevented a rocket propelled grenade from slamming into him during a firefight in 2005. The last of those more than 15,000 gunner protection kits and 6,000 overhead cover kits will be assembled on Friday, April 16.

"We sometimes don't give those kids those skills," Templeton said, "because we assume they are big enough and old enough to know how not to get into a situation, and sometimes they don't know." Luis Rivera, a retired special operator employed by U.S. Southern Command, is currently working on a PhD program in the Science of Martial Arts and Disaster Management, at York University. Forty-three years and 21,000 flying hours later, Dargue will make his last flight as a military aviator on March 26. He's capping a career which included a year in Vietnam, another year in Iraq, and service in the Active Army, Army Reserve and New York Army National Guard. "It's the end of an era for this flight facility and this unit, said Lt. Col. Mark Slusar, the commander of the 3rd Battalion 142nd Assault Helicopter Battalion, headquartered here. " The lessons and the experience this guy can pass on will be greatly missed."

Paterson announced today that he has appointed Brigadier General Patrick Murphy, a former Iowa Army National Guard officer, as the 52nd Adjutant General of New York State, to replace Major General Joseph Taluto upon his retirement on February 14. "Brigadier General Murphy is an outstanding officer who brings with him a wealth of experience integrating the National Guard and active military components into State emergency and security planning, homeland defense, and anti-terrorism activities," Governor Paterson said. "He has played a critical role in the New York National Guard's response to flooding in Western New York, providing emergency aid to other states, and refocusing the National Guard's Joint Task Force Empire Shield into a more capable security force in New York City."

    U.S. Army CERDEC is deploying an engineer and its Cerberus surveillance systems to aid Haitian humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts following the recent 7.0-magnitude earthquake. They are scheduled to deploy with the 82nd Airborne Division. While Cerberus's official function in Haiti is still unknown, the system has the ability to provide security to areas such as airports that house relief supplies.

    Leaders of the New York Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, the Army's famous "Fighting 69th," will pay their final respects in Calif. this weekend to Alejandro R. Ruiz, a former comrade and Medal of Honor recipient. Ruiz, from Visalia, Calif. and more recently the Veterans Home in Yountville, died Nov. 23 at a hospital in Napa, Calif. from congestive heart failure. Lieutenant Colonel John Andonie, from Clifton Park, N.Y. and his senior enlisted Soldier, Command Sgt. Maj. Jorge Vasquez from Jackson Heights, N.Y. will travel to Calif. to meet with the Ruiz family and present honors at the gravesite of Alejandro Ruiz.

The Guard Soldiers served as brakemen, responsible for starting and stopping the sled.
