"Dakota" was announced over the Air Battle Net, indicating the flight of four CH-47s with dual shotgun HMMWVs on long lines had reached the release point and would starburst to four separate landing zones. After about one minute of flight, all aircraft lost communication with each other due to the limited line of sight and aged, failing equipment. In zero illumination, I was in the lead aircraft using my limited experience and flight training to find an LZ, which was located along the border of a non-allied country in a very austere environment. Once we delivered the load and our passengers, we exited the LZ en route to the start point. Our plan was to link up with the flight as we returned to the pickup zone for one more trip into the objective area. Just shy of the SP, I heard a broken radio transmission over the ABN: "The HMMWVs are in a pile, but we're OK."

As the wind whipped by at 155 mph, I noticed two things. First, the Porsche I was racing had finally dropped off -- not even he was this crazy. Second, with the turbo kicked in full-bore to hold this speed, I could actually see the needle on my motorcycle's gas gauge dropping. I backed it down and took the next exit as the Porsche screamed past and the driver waved.

Joseph Brennan enlisted in the Army after his cousin, Sgt. Joshua Brennan was killed in action when his squad was ambushed on Oct. 25th, 2007 in the Korengal Valley of Kunar Province, Afghanistan. For his actions that day, fighting off the ambush and recovering the wounded Brennan from the clutches of Taliban fighters, then Spc. Salvatore Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor. Ever since that tragic date, Joseph has followed in the footsteps of his cousin Joshua.

It was a cool fall night in the sandhills of Nebraska, and I was about halfway through my shift as a state trooper. Assigned to a remote duty station, I'd learned to work by myself. When something happened, many times I talked directly with the local sheriff's office, which was in the middle of my work area. The Adjutant General Panel at the United Nations Peace Operations and Law Symposium was held in downtown Chicago on July 8, 2011. The panel included: Major General William Enyart, The Adjutant General of Illinois; Brigadier General Donald Dunbar, The Adjutant General of Wisconsin; and Major General Andrew Turley, Air National Guard Assistant to the Judge Advocate General. The audience consisted of U.S. and foreign military legal personnel, law and political science professors, ambassadors, and legal representatives from several large non-government organizations. The symposium topic was ‘A Decade of Peace’ and various distinguished guests, both civilian and military, discussed the success and failures in peacekeeping and SSTR (stability, security, transition and reconstruction) operations that have influenced current operations, impacted emerging missions and fostered state-to-state partnerships.

At the YMCA’s Camp Abe Lincoln, several dozen military family children bonded with their peers July 3-8. At the invitation of camp organizers, Col. Richard Dix, Army Sustainment Command's chief of staff, spoke with campers. He pointed out that kids whose parents deploy overseas, especially to combat areas, bear a part of the burden of military service. Dix stressed that families need a “battle buddy” to get them through the challenges of military life and encouraged the campers to help each other through difficult times.

Soldiers with the Missouri National Gaurd work to fill sandbags provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, using both traditional manpower via shovels and a sandbagging machine deployed by the Corps. Corps experts deployed from Kansas City District with the sandbagging machine to assist the Missouri National Guard with its operation and maintenance. To date, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, has issued nearly 2 million sandbags for communities within its area of operations to help with this year's historic floodfighting efforts.
